Vicki Solá

Show Fuerza Gigante
Timing Friday | 8 – 10 PM EST

For four decades, Vicki Solá and the weekly radio program she created, Que Viva La Música, heard on 89.1 WFDU-FM and worldwide online at wfdu.fm, have provided the New York-metro community and beyond with Salsa and Latin jazz produced by a singular mix of famous performers, plus artists rarely heard on commercial stations. In August 2021, Solá wrapped up her long career at WFDU-FM and passed the torch to the next generation, her co-hosts Marysol Cerdeira Rodriguez, José Calderόn, and King Louie Vazquez. This dedicated team remains committed to keeping the five-hour-long Que Viva La Música on the station’s Saturday afternoon airwaves. WFDU-FM’s King Louie Vazquez is also heard on Mundo Salsa Radio on Tuesday evenings.

During the mid-eighties, Solá worked with on-air personality Polito Vega at radio station WBNX-AM. Recently, Solá appeared on Tiempo (ABC7-NY WABC-TV) with Joe Torres, who describes her as a Latina radio pioneer. Featured on American Latino TV, Solá was invited to serve as an advisor to the Smithsonian Institution for their traveling exhibition, Latin Jazz: La Combinación Perfecta, and since 1988 her articles and columns have appeared in internationally circulated trade periodicals Latin Beat Magazine, Descarga, Impacto, Latin London, and Que Pasa.

Solá has authored two comedic Sci-Fi Fantasy books, You Can’t Unscramble the Omelet, and The Getaway That Got Away. Both are enjoyed by readers of all ages. The works detail the adventures of young Latina protagonist Nicki Rodriguez as she begins to find her power.

On August 10th, 2021, Solá, a lifelong dog lover and animal welfare advocate, launched a weekly podcast, Perswayssick Radio: Unearthly Comedy, based on the adventures of Nicki Rodriguez and inspired by her own beloved pets. The episodes allow listeners to escape into the bizarre fantasy sci-fi dimension of Perswayssick County as Solá breathes life into its madcap inhabitants. When earthling Solá morphs into alter ego disc jockey Nicki Rodriguez and clashes with zany extraterrestrial canine-humanoid Gneeecey (with whom she’s pictured), the fun and laughs begin! And it’s a one-woman show—Solá does the writing, character voices, and audio production.

The podcast is available on her website https://perswayssickradio.buzzsprout.com, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict, and most other podcast platforms.
